4K Smart Projector: How to Spot a Real 4K

The projectors in this category all claim 4K or UHD, but not in the same way: native panel, pixel shifting or simple compatibility with the signal. Resolution is no longer what sets the price, and what the price gap really buys is detailed below the selection.

My opinion

I will be direct: in this category, the word 4K decides nothing on its own. An entry-level unit and another one costing several times more both print 4K on the box, and the picture has nothing in common. What separates them is brightness, contrast and optics, three things that do not fit into a marketing figure.

The test that settles it is simple and costs nothing: think about the time of day you will project. In the evening, curtains drawn, an entry-level model gives a very decent result on a two-metre-wide image. In daytime in a bright living room, brightness is what you need to buy, and it comes at a price.

If you are torn between an entry-level 4K and a better-equipped Full HD model at the same price, I take the second. Resolution can be made up for with viewing distance, light cannot.

Narrow your search

For a device you can put away and carry from room to room, our mini portable projectors bring together the compact models, with their native resolution and their weight.

Frequently asked questions

Native 4K or processed 4K, how can I tell?

The product page says so when it is native. When it mentions compatibility with a 4K signal or 4K input, it is processing: the projector receives the 4K source and displays it at its real resolution. That is not a flaw, it is price information.

What image size should I aim for?

The bigger the image, the more resolution matters, and the more brightness has to keep up. Beyond three metres wide in a bright room, an entry-level model shows its limits before 4K is of any use.

Is 4K worth it on a white wall?

Yes, but less than on a screen. A painted wall scatters light in every direction and eats into contrast. You will see the resolution, and lose part of what brings it out.

The six models in this selection

Each product page gives the native resolution of the panel and the 4K input separately. The LUMINA™ Vision 4K and the VISTA™ Cinema 800 project native Full HD 1080p, the LUMINO™ K2 and the LUMIVUE™ A12 native 720p; all of them accept a 4K source and run Android, so streaming apps work without a separate box.
